Meet Christina and Her Family
Members at Westfield Area Y
“I am honored to share my story as a member of the YMCA community.
My family and I, a family of five, with three kids, began our journey at the Westfield Area YMCA over six years ago. Before finding the YMCA, we were constantly on the move, searching for stability and a welcoming community. Unfortunately, each new place brought its own challenges—social isolation, safety concerns, and limited opportunities for our family.
However, everything changed when we found the Westfield Area Y. It was never just a gym; it was a home away from home —a place where our kids could thrive and grow.
Our three children, who love their experiences with the class instructors and caregivers at the Kids Club, have truly blossomed here. In fact, some staff members have remarked on how much our oldest daughter and middle son have grown, both physically and emotionally, compared to when they first joined the YMCA. But it's not just about growth; it's about the sense of inclusion, belonging and community that the YMCA provides. Without the programs offered for families in need, we wouldn't have been able to experience all the wonderful things the YMCA has to offer.
Being a family of five with low income, the YMCA's financial assistance program was a lifeline for us. It allowed us to enroll our children in programs they love, such as swim lessons and summer camps, which have not only enriched their lives but also provided a sense of normalcy and joy during challenging times.
If the assistance wasn't available, we would have struggled to afford these essential programs. The impact of the YMCA's financial assistance program has been profound, relieving a significant financial burden for our family and enabling our children to participate in activities that have positively impacted their physical health, social skills, and overall well-being.
The YMCA holds a special place in our hearts. It's more than just a place to work out or attend programs—it's a community that has embraced us and supported us through our toughest times. The staff members who have shown us kindness and compassion have made us feel like valued members of the community, and for that, we are forever grateful.”
